Financial institution Bank of America on April 8 announced its goal of deploying and mobilising $1-trillion by 2030 in its Environmental Business Initiative to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon, sustainable economy. This commitment will anchor a broader $1.5-trillion sustainable finance goal by both environmental transition and social inclusive development purposes, spanning business activities across the globe, said Bank of America vice-chairperson Anne Finucane.

Creamer Media’s Chanel de Bruyn speaks to Engineering News Editor Terence Creamer about the global push for net zero, what this means for the future energy system and whether South Africa is on the same net zero pathway as other countries.
The Extraordinary Double Troika Summit of Heads of States and government of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) has directed an immediate SADC Organ on Politics Defence and Security technical deployment to Mozambique following insurgent attacks in northern town of Palma. Recent reports revealed that twelve people, possibly foreigners, were found beheaded after an Islamic State-claimed attack on Palma, near natural gas projects worth $60-billion.
Renewable-energy and hydrogen supply company Nel Hydrogen launched the MC250 and MC500 containerised large-scale proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysers. The PEM electrolysers represent automated megawatt-class on-site hydrogen generators, using a modular containerised design for ease of installation and integration.
As technology is improving, newer controllers have been introduced to the market. This has seen portable air compressors and generator rental company Rand-Air generators having been fitted with the QC4003 controller developed by generator manufacturer Atlas Copco.
Customers should be made aware about the care and maintenance required to keep a generator in good working order, and the type of generator most suited to their needs, says construction equipment hire and sales company Hire It director Richard Fraser. He explains that the maintenance requirements are similar to that of a car, in that the generator will need to be serviced regularly.
Power management company Eaton has launched the second generation of its market-leading Eaton 93PM G2 three-phase uninterruptible power supply (UPS) in South Africa. The modular and scalable design of the 93PM G2 enables data centre operators to grow capacity and power protection in line with business demand, while providing the industry’s lowest total cost of ownership in its class.
Vertical manufacturer HIMOINSA developed a gas-powered generator set with maintenance periods that stretch for up to 10 000 hours, or 14 months of continuous work, highlights HIMOINSA Southern Africa senior sales engineer Warrick Taylor.
The generator’s estimated service life of 30 000 hours until overhaul is much longer than the average life of diesel equipment of the same size, potentially requiring only two services throughout its entire working life.
The global liquified petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder manufacturing market is projected to reach a market size of about $4.7-billion by 2026, with an average growth rate of about 3.6% during the forecast period, according to a report issued by market intelligence provider Transparency Market Research last month. LPG, sometimes also referred to as simply propane or butane, is typically stored in gas cylinders or tanks, which are pressure vessels that keep the LPG at above atmospheric pressure.
The stipulation that solar projects bid as part of the Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (RMIPPPP) include photovoltaic (PV) modules that meet the local-content thresholds and conditionalities outlined in government’s designation for PV components is causing some anxiety among independent power producers (IPPs) and their engineering contractors. Neither laminated PV modules, nor module frames received an exemption from the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (DTIC), owing to the existence of local industrial capacity to conduct final assembly and compliance testing.
